Between 1897 and 1902, Village of Fort Sheridan Firefighter Andrew Roberg died in the line of duty after returning from a fire at the Lancaster Milk House.
After returning from the fire, members of the fire department washed their hose and gear, hanging the hose in the tower to dry near a coal or kerosene stove. Roberg was asked to remain in the tower to watch over the hose as it dried. The next morning Roberg’s body was discovered in the tower. Roberg either died of freezing temperatures or exposure to fumes.
