On May 27, 1978, Captain Wallace L. Faulk of the New Lenox Fire Protection District suffered a fatal heart attack in the line of duty. Faulk collapsed less than two hours after he responded to a vehicle accident on Interstate 80. He was transported to Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, where efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Funeral services for Faulk were held at New Lenox Methodist Church on May 31, and he was buried at Mt. Vernon Memorial Estates.
Faulk joined the New Lenox Fire Protection District as a volunteer in 1966. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1972 and to captain in 1976. He also served on the industrial fire brigade at Fischer Body Company, where he was a full-time employee, and served three years as vice president of the Des Plaines Valley Mutual Aid Association. Outside of the fire service, Faulk was active in New Lenox Boys Baseball and was a member of the New Lenox Grade School Board.
