On April 10, 2003, Assistant Chief Vannie Duane Keever of the Gulfport/Gladstone Fire Protection District died in the line of duty while fighting a fire in a vacant home. Shortly after arriving at the fire, Keever suffered a fatal heart attack while working on water supply operations.
