On December 10, 2020, Captain Leo W. Werner of the Scales Mound Fire Protection District suffered a fatal heart attack in the line of duty.
Captain Werner responded to medical call on the night of December 9, 2020. About a half hour after returning home, Werner’s family called 911. He passed away after suffering an apparent heart attack on December 10 at 12:02 am.
Funeral services for Werner were held privately for the family at the Miller-Steinke Funeral Home, followed by burial at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Scales Mound on December 15. He was survived by his widow and three children.
Werner had been a firefighter with the Scales Mound Fire Protection District for 46 years and was employed at Kelly-Springfield Tire Company in Freeport for 30 years until his retirement.
