On April 13, 2013, Firefighter Lawrence “Lance” Stone of the West Union Community Fire Protection District died in the line of duty while responding to a reported fire. Stone was responding to the call in his personally owned vehicle when it left the roadway and rolled en route. He was ejected from the vehicle and subsequently died from his injuries.
Funeral services for Stone were held at Forsythe Cemetery on Saturday, April 20, and he was survived by his widow, five children, and one stepdaughter.
