On October 31, 2010, Assistant Chief Gary L. Cummins of the Brocton Fire Protection District suffered a fatal heart attack in the line of duty.
As the Truck Engineer for Engine 1, Cummins was among the first firefighters to respond to a residential fire on East 1400th Road in Embarrass Township. After arriving at the residence, Cummins lost consciousness while positioning Engine 1 on the fireground, and the vehicle left the road and drove into a ditch. Cummins was treated at the scene and transported to Paris Community Hospital, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Funeral services for Cummins were held at Krabel Funeral Home on November 6, and he was interred at Embarrass Cemetery. He was survived by two sons and one grandson.
A lifelong resident of Brocton, Cummins worked as the Embarrass Township Road Commissioner and was a member of the Brocton Fire Protection District for 41 years.
