Science, Medicine, Research, Technology for Emergency Responders (SMARTER) - Skidmore College lead

Summary

Funding provided by: Skidmore College

Led by partners at Skidmore College, the SMARTER project (Science, Medicine, Research, Technology for Emergency Responders) aims to employ scientific advances, medical knowledge, research findings, and technological solutions to reduce firefighter injuries and fatalities. Along with IFSI, this project includes collaborations with University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine, Fire Protection Research Foundation (FPRF), National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) and others. This project will address key vulnerabilities in the fire service by focusing on heat related injuries, cardiovascular events and chemical exposures due to fire induced air contamination in a single study.

The IFSI Research team will focus on collecting and assembling data from laboratory and live-fire experiments to calibrate, then validate the core temperature estimation algorithm, as well as assisting in monitoring air contamination measurements during live-fire scenarios.
