Illinois Fire Service Institute

New Academy Format

As the statutory fire academy for Illinois, we take our mission seriously and are consistently looking for opportunities to improve and support the fire service in Illinois. It is with great enthusiasm that we announce the changing format of our Basic Firefighter/NFPA Firefighter I Academy. Beginning in the spring of 2018, the IFSI Fire Academy will extend from a six week to a seven week program. The additional time will:

  • Allow for more one-on-one and small unit instruction time

  • Allow for expanded coverage of the more challenging skill sets

  • Allow more practical skills application for each student by reducing the required skills/drills covered on an average day

  • Allow for slightly shorter training days thus enhancing student learning

Tuition rates will be adjusted appropriately for the extended program and posted to the Basic Firefighter / NFPA Firefighter I Academy Course Description page by January 1, 2018.

The 2018 Spring Fire Academy begins on March 5, 2018. We look forward to welcoming another group of candidates to the firegrounds in early spring.
