Chicago Fire Department Firefighter Patrick Burns was awarded the Medal of Valor for his actions during a residential fire on the South side of Chicago in 2014.
A male victim was attempting to escape the apartment fire through a window. Burns used a garbage can as a step to enter the apartment and help the victim out of the window. The victim then informed him his mother was still trapped inside the smoke-filled apartment. Burns conducted a search and located the female victim, and helped get her out of the apartment and to paramedics.
