Captain Mauricio Rodriguez of the Chicago Fire Department received the Medal of Honor for his actions to rescue two unconscious men from a second-floor apartment fire on the morning of January 18, 2013.
Engine Company 116 was the first to arrive at the scene of a residential apartment fire with heavy visible smoke conditions on the second story of the building. Captain Rodriguez ordered his crew to lead out one hose line to the location of the fire, though the team was advancing the line under extreme heat and smoke. After hearing groans, Captain Rodriguez chose to leave the safety of the hose line and discovered two unconscious male victims on the kitchen floor and a third person attempting to drag one of the victims to safety. He assisted with the removal of the first victim and then returned to the kitchen to move the second victim to safety. Captain Rodriguez was met by responding EMS units, and after both victims were put under their care, he returned to his company to extinguish the rest of the fire.
