Chicago Fire Department Lieutenant John Majka was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during a residential fire on October 28, 2012.
As the firefighters arrived on the scene, they saw heavy smoke coming from a second-floor window of a two-story home. Family members alerted Majka that an elderly woman was trapped on the second floor. Majka entered the home and went upstairs without the protection of a hose line and began to search for the victim. He arrived at a bedroom engulfed in flames. Despite extreme heat and smoke, and limited visibility, Majka moved through the room and found the missing woman unconscious on the bed. He was able to remove the woman from the room and into the hallway, where other firefighters were bringing up the hose line. Assisted by Firefighter Anthony Licato, he brought the victim outside safely.
