Driver Todd Warrick of the Jacksonville Fire Department was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions to rescue two females from a residential fire in Jacksonville, Illinois on February 13, 2006.
Warrick was off duty, listening to his scanner at home, when he heard a dispatch about an attic fire at a residence right down the street from him. He immediately leaped to action, heading three houses down to 1103 S. East St. When he arrived, he checked the front and back doors. Both were locked. He proceeded to kick in the front door. Once inside, he found a mother and daughter in a bedroom near the kitchen, where fiery debris was raining down from the ceiling. They were both asleep. Warrick woke them up and promptly evacuated them safely from the residence, despite not having any of his protective firefighting gear on. He was burnt by the falling debris during the rescue, but suffered no major injuries.
