Lieutenant James Barnett of the Lincolnwood Fire Department was awarded the Medal of Valor for his efforts to rescue a child from a burning house in Lincolnwood, Illinois on January 23, 2004.
Lieutenant Barnett was off-duty, relaxing on his front porch, when he heard his neighbor’s daughters coughing. He went next door and saw a fire emanating from the kitchen. He instructed his neighbors to vacate the residence and wait for the fire department to arrive. Before they did, however, he discovered a child inside the home and quickly removed it. In the meantime, Barnett did what he could to extinguish the flames and prevent further damage. He used the kitchen faucet sprayer as well as cups of water to in an attempt to douse the flames. In the process, the hair from his face and arms was singed off.
