Chief Kenneth Dunn of the Tinley Park Fire Department was awarded the Medal of Valor for his efforts to rescue a fellow firefighter from a residential fire in unincorporated Cook County in Illinois on April 7, 1999.
At 10 A.M., crews from several fire departments were dispatched to a residential fire at 6959 W. 157th St. The empty home was fully involved when members of the Oak Forest and Tinley Park Fire Departments arrived on the scene. The house was difficult to access because a road near the house was blocked off. Oak Forest firefighter Chuck Evans entered the home and was on the second floor when the situation became dangerous. The only way for Evans to escape was through a second-story window. Chief Dunn reached up and grabbed him as he exited through the window. Evans’ clothing was so hot from the intense flames that Dunn suffered second-degree burns on both of his hands. Despite the injury, Dunn’s heroic actions kept Evans’ injuries to a minimum (he suffered burns on his neck and back).
