On September 28, 1981, Engineer Walter McGraw of Engine Company No. 8 of the Chicago Fire Department died from a heart attack after returning from a fire call.
As McGraw was preparing the engine for the next call, he complained of feeling ill and collapsed. Firefighters performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation before McGraw was taken to Mercy Hospital where he died.
McGraw became a member of the Department in 1975. He was survived by his wife and seven children.
