On February 1, 2008, Fire Chief Matthew Hubly of the Kankakee Township Fire Protection District suffered a heart attack in the line of duty.
Hubly became ill while attending a meeting about fire protection systems at a local industrial facility, and collapsed as he was leaving the facility. Hubly was transported to Provena St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee, where he suffered two more heart attacks while undergoing treatment. Hubly never regained consciousness, and he died on February 7.
Funeral services for Hubly were held at Bishop McNamara High School in Kankakee, and he was survived by his widow, two children, and his parents and siblings.
Hubly joined the Kankakee Township Fire Protection District in 1991 as a firefighter, and climbed the ranks over the next twelve years until he was appointed as Fire Chief in 2003. He worked full-time as the fire/rescue instructor at the Kankakee Area Career Center, and was also active in the Kankakee Valley Tactical Rescue Team and the Kankakee Valley Fire Academy.
