On October 29, 2007, Lieutenant Scott Mumm of the Mendota Fire Department suffered a fatal heart attack shortly after fighting a coal rail car fire.
Mumm responded to the fire around 5:30PM, and contributed to water supply operations for more than two hours. He returned to his home around 8:15PM and went to sleep, but when his wife attempted to wake him at around 9:30PM, he was unresponsive. Mumm was transported to Mendota Community Hospital, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Funeral services for Mumm were held at First United Methodist Church in Mendota on November 2, and he was survived by his widow, three children, parents, and two siblings.
