Incident Summary
On October 6, 1948, Chief Lyle Guy of the Litchfield Fire Department was killed in the line of duty while responding to a house fire. Guy and the other firefighters had initially been unable to enter the house due to the strength of the fire, but Guy and another firefighter entered the house once the flames were under control. In pulling down some burning drapes, Guy created a small flash fire and unexpectedly inhaled some heated gases. Guy was immediately helped out of the house, but he collapsed on the street and was taken to St. Francis Hospital where he died two hours later. Guy had been Chief for only five months, having been appointed to the position on May 7, 1948.
