On August 25, 1948, the Alton Fire Department received an alarm at 12:50 AM. While responding to the alarm, Probationary Pipeman Warren Baker suffered a fatal injury at the Upper Alton Firehouse when he either fell through the floor trap or fell while sliding down the fire pole.
Baker was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served three years in the Pacific during World War II. Baker was buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Alton and members of the local V.F.W. provided military honors during his funeral.
