M. James Bentley joined the Libertyville Fire Department on January 3, 1967, as a paid-on-call firefighter. He became a full-time, career firefighter in July 1971, and served for twenty-five years. In September 1996, he retired on duty disability as an assistant chief. On February 26, 2004, Bentley succumbed to cancer, and the Libertyville Fire Department designated his death as in the line of duty.
Funeral services for Bentley were held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on March 2, and he was buried at Ascension Cemetery.
