On January 10, 1899, Chicago Fire Department Truckman John S. Burns of Truck 1 was fatally injured in the line of duty while responding to a fire alarm. He was injured when the chemical engine on which he was riding overturned at the intersection of Van Buren Street and Pacific Avenue. He died from his injuries at Cook County Hospital on January 14.
