On January 11, 1877, Chicago Fire Department Lieutenant Richard Sweeney of Engine 1 died in the line of duty when he was thrown from a hose cart while responding to a fire alarm.
Funeral services for Sweeney were held at St. Patrick’s Church on January 13.
