On January 14, 1893, Chicago Fire Department Truckman Larson Petterson of Truck 2 died in the line of duty while fighting a fire at the Garden City Fan Company located at the intersection of North Clinton and West Washington Streets. While trying to find his way through the smoke-filled building, Petterson stepped into an elevator shaft and fell to his death.
