On December 25, 1965, Chicago Fire Department Firefighter William Huerta of Engine 112 died in the line of duty while fighting a fire in a vacant building. He was carrying hose up an icy stairwell when he slipped off the steps and fell more than thirty feet to the pavement below. Huerta was transported to American Hospital where died several hours later.
