On April 6, 1955, two Chicago Fire Department firefighters died in the line of duty during a 2-11 commercial fire on Madison Street. Lieutenant Chester Marmoll of Truck 7 and Firefighter Robert Synakiewitz of Engine 24 were both overcome by smoke in a rear storeroom of a Walgreens Drugstore. They were transported to Presbyterian Hospital and were both pronounced dead on arrival.
