On August 19, 1931, Chicago Fire Department Firefighter Anthony M. Kennedy of Engine 17 was fatally injured while on duty at his firehouse on West Lake Street. He was hurt when he fell from the sliding pole after being awakened by a fire alarm. Kennedy suffered a fractured skull and was treated at West Side Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries on August 30.
