On September 6, 1930, Chicago Fire Department Firefighter Ernest Schabes of Squad 2 was fatally injured while fighting a fire at a drug store on West Madison Street. He was climbing a ladder when it slipped, causing him to fall more than twenty-five feet to the sidewalk below. Schabes died the following day, September 7, at West Side Hospital.
