On September 14, 2004, Captain Kevin L. Slain of the Dixon Rural Fire Protection District died in the line of duty. After attending a meeting of the fire protection district board of trustees at the district fire station, Slain reported feeling unwell. He was treated at the fire station, and transported to the hospital, where he died from a fatal heart attack.
