Incident Summary
On September 7, 2001, Lieutenant Robert A. Augustyn of the Cicero Fire Department died in the line of duty. Augustyn and his engine company responded to a traffic accident, but were released from the incident by fire department ambulance staff. As the fire engine maneuvered to leave the scene, Augustyn exited the vehicle to help guide the apparatus as it backed up. Augustyn fell to the ground, was struck by the vehicle, and suffered serious crushing injuries. He died the following day, September 8, and funeral services were held on September 10.
