On April 11, 1968, Firefighter Lloyd Walter Dunsworth of the Rock Island Fire Department died in the line of duty. Dunsworth and other Rock Island firefighters were battling a rapidly moving grass and leaf fire in the southwest section of Rock Island in the area behind 8005 Ridgewood Rd. when Dunsworth collapsed. He was transported to St. Anthony’s Hospital where he passed away at 3:25 PM.
Dunsworth’s death was initially thought to be caused by a heart attack. The preliminary pathologist report, however, concluded that he died of asphyxiation and the coroner stated that there was nothing noticeably wrong with his heart.
Dunsworth was a member of the Rock Island Fire Department for seven years. He was survived by his widow and four children.
Funeral services were held at Hodgson Funeral Home in Rock Island.
