On September 30, 2020, Firefighter Dylan Cunningham of the South Holland Fire Department died during a training accident in Kankakee.
Cunningham was participating in a night dive training exercise in Haigh Quarry in Kankakee on September 30. At approximately 9:30 PM, paramedics from the Bourbonnais Fire Protection District were called to the scene to help a diver in distress. Cunningham was in “critical distress” by the time paramedics reached him, and he was taken to Amita St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee. He was later transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:40 PM.
A visitation for Cunningham was held at Smits Funeral Home in Dyer, Indiana on October 6 and funeral services were held at Smits Funeral Home on October 7 with the South Holland Fire Department Chaplain Rev. Daniel Svendsen officiating. He was survived by his fiancé, parents, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, and cousins.
