On August 5, 1895, Chicago Fire Department Lieutenant John Meyers died after drowning off the shore of the lake at Seventy-sixth street.
Lieutenant Meyers was stationed on the fireboat Chicago in the Calumet River. Meyers had been sailing in the yacht Ella, with the owner when bad weather caused the yacht to overturn.
