On November 24, 1977, Chicago Fire Department Firefighter James M. Smith of Engine 73 was fatally injured in the line of duty while responding to a fire.
Smith was thrown from Engine 73 at the intersection of 104th Street and Harvard Avenue, and he died from his injuries on December 16.
Funeral services for Smith were held at St. Thomas More Church on December 20, and he was survived by his widow and stepdaughter.
