Incident Summary

On January 1, 1922, Chicago Fire Department Engines 14 and 27 collided at the intersection of Division and Laramie Streets while responding to a false alarm. Lieutenant Albert Little of Engine 27 and Firefighters Patrick Dixon and William Gelis of Engine 14 were fatally injured in the collision, and seven other firefighters were injured.

The engine companies received the alarm at 10:52PM and responded from their firehouses. Engine 27 was traveling westbound on Division Street and Engine 14 was traveling northbound on Larabee Street, and they arrived at the intersection at the same time. Engine 27 crashed into the side of Engine 14 and skidded across the street, while Engine 14 crashed into the curb. Neither apparatus overturned, but firefighters were thrown from both vehicles.

Lieutenant Little and Firefighter Dixon died at the scene of the accident. Firefighter Gelis, who was driving Engine 14, was treated at Henrotin Hospital for a crushed left shoulder, a fractured skull, and internal injuries, and he died from his injuries the following day, January 2.
