Heartsaver First Aid
The Heartsaver First Aid only course is intended to supplement the education of our EMS Aide volunteers so that they may better assist their lead EMT. However, this class is also open to U of I affiliates and members of the public. This class is not intended for healthcare professionals or students and is considered a layrescuer certification.
Registration and Payment
Registration for classes must be done below through the appropriate button. The class fee is $45 for IEMS/IFSI members, $50 for University of Illinois students/faculty/staff, and $55 for all others. In order to qualify for the IEMS member discount, you must have completed Steps 1-5 on the "Join Us" page of our website before the day of your First Aid class.
This class teaches a broad overview of First Aid topics, such as what to do in the case of a traumatic emergency (bleeding control, splinting, tourniquet usage, amputation, etc.), medical emergency (low blood sugar in diabetics, stroke, chest pain, and seizures, etc.), and environmental emergency (heat exhaustion vs. stroke, hypothermia, insect and animal bites, etc.). The course is approximately 3 hours long, in addition to a brief skills test. Students will receive an AHA Heartsaver First Aid certificate 1-2 weeks after successful completion of the course and the skills test.
