Joseph McCauley, an apparatus operator for the Joliet Fire Department, died in the line of duty on March 1, 1971. During a cold night, McCauley became ill while running the pump at a house fire. He climbed into the cab of the fire engine, where his fellow firefighters later found him dead of a heart attack.
McCauley was remembered as an exceptionally quiet man, who always turned down vacations because all he wanted to do was watch sports on television, which he could do at the firehouse.
