On January 3, 1984, Firefighter Thomas Baron of the Steger Fire Department suffered a fatal heart attack in the line of duty while fighting a residential fire. Baron collapsed after operating a hose line during firefighting operations.
Funeral services for Baron were held at St. Liborius Catholic Church on January 6, and he was interred at Calvary Cemetery. He was survived by his widow, two children, father, and sister.
Baron had been a member of the Steger Fire Department for twenty years, and he worked full-time as a repairman for the Illinois Bell Telephone Company.
