On July 31, 1928, Chicago Fire Department Firefighter Joseph Mixon of Engine 15 died in the line of duty while responding to a fire at the Western Shade Cloth Plant located at the intersection of West 21st and Jefferson Streets. Mixon was driving Battalion Chief Thomas Geary to the scene of the fire when his car collided with a fire truck at the intersection of West 21st Street and Canalport Avenue. Mixon was fatally injured in the vehicle collision.
