University of Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) Head Librarian, Dr. Lian Ruan, is the 2017 recipient of the Illinois Library Association (ILA) Illinois Academic Librarian of the Year Award. The award recognizes an Illinois librarian who makes significant statewide contributions to academic or research librarianship and to library development. The award is presented by the ILA Illinois Association of College and Research Libraries (IACRL) Forum and sponsored by the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois.
Dr. Ruan has served as Head Librarian for the Illinois Fire Service Institute since 1999. In 2006, she also assumed the role of Director of International Programs. Under her leadership, the Illinois Fire Service Institute’s Library has been a finalist for the National Medal for Museum and Library Service award for the last two years and is one of the top three fire service libraries in the nation. As an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of Illinois, Dr. Ruan has mentored graduate and PhD students in library science. She has coordinated training programs with partners in emergency management, including training for Chinese and Korean first responders.
Additionally, Dr. Ruan has served as past President and current Executive Director of the Chinese American Libraries Association (CALA). She also serves on the Illinois State Library Advisory Committee, the Special Library Association’s Emergency Preparedness and Recovery Council, and is a member of the Joint Council of Librarians of Color Steering Committee.
Dr. Ruan will be presented the award at the 2017 Illinois Library Association Annual Conference in October.
