Education

Illini EMS teaches a variety of classes to students, campus affiliates, and members of the community. Click on the class links below for more information or to register.

COVID-19 CPR Class Update:

Beginning May 18, 2020, IEMS will continue to offer CPR classes with several additional safety precautions in place to limit the spread of COVID-19.

We are currently offering:  (additional details regarding our safety precautions are available on each course page)

- American Heart Association Heartcode BLS with online lecture and Voice Assisted Manikin for the skills portion (1:1 student to instructor ratio)

- ECSI CPR/AED/First Aid: Hybrid with online lecture and 1.5 hour in-person skills portion (capped at 5 students with online lecture component)

Hands-Only CPR with AED (only available to groups)

ECSI CPR/AED/First Aid: In-Person

The ECSI, CPR, AED, and First Aid In-Person class goes over the skills involved in CPR (both adult and infant), AED usage, and First Aid topics. Upon successful completion, students will receive an ECSI CPR/AED/First Aid certification valid for 2 years. This level of certification is NOT sufficient to work IEMS events (see our AHA BLS options). 

 

COVID-19 Update: All previously scheduled ECSI CPR/AED/First Aid: In-Person classes are canceled until further notice. However, IEMS will continue to offer ECSI classes periodically throughout the summer at the Illinois Fire Service Institue. AHA HeartCode BLS CPR: Hybrid

The American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider (AHA BLS Provider) HeartCode course is intended for healthcare professionals or students of health professions. This class provides training in adult, child, and infant CPR as well as AED usage. It consists of an online portion (completed before class) and then an instructor-led, in-class portion. Upon successful completion of the in-class part, students will receive an AHA HeartCode BLS CPR certification valid for 2 years. This level of certification is required to work IEMS events.

 

COVID-19 Update: All previously scheduled AHA HeartCode BLS CPR: Hybrid in-person classes are canceled until further notice. However, we are continuing to offer AHA BLS Education with our Voice Assisted Manikin option (same material and same certification).

ECSI CPR/AED/First Aid: Hybrid

The ECSI, CPR, AED, and First Aid Hybrid class goes over the skills involved in CPR (both adult and infant), AED usage, and First Aid topics. It consists of an online portion (completed before class) and then an instructor-led, in-class portion. Upon successful completion, students will receive an ECSI CPR/AED/First Aid certification valid for 2 years. 

 

COVID-19 Update: As of June 2020, we have resumed offering this course.

 

 Please email illinimedservices@illinois.edu if you are interested in taking this course to be added to our waiting list. All classes will take place at the Illinois Fire service Institute. The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority and we have added several precautions to allow distancing between students and limited contact between students and instructors (see COVID-19 Safety Notice).

Hands Only CPR with AED

The Hands-Only (HO) CPR with AED course provides training on how to perform compressions-only CPR on an individual in cardiac arrest and teaches how to use an AED. HO CPR can significantly increase a person's chance of survival and is backed by several organizations including Illini EMS and the American Heart Association. This class does not give a certification but provides high-quality training with hands-on practice. This course is only offered to groups.

AHA HeartCode BLS CPR: VAM

The American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider (AHA BLS Provider) HeartCode course is intended for healthcare professionals or students of health professions. This class provides training in adult, child, and infant CPR as well as AED usage. It consists of an online portion (approximately 3 hours) and then a 30-minute hands-on skills session conducted at the Illinois Fire Service Institute (until further notice). Upon successful completion of the hands-on skills session, students will receive an AHA BLS CPR certification valid for 2 years. This level of certification is required to work IEMS events.

 

Beginning May 18, 2020, this course will continue to be offered. The safety of the students and staff is our priority and all recommendations by the AHA and Illinois Fire Service Institute will be followed to the fullest extent.

EMT Basic

The Fall 2020 IEMS EMT class application is now open! In addition to the online application, the last two pages of the course policies must be signed and submitted to illinimedservices@illinois.edu (found under Membership > Documents).The application and signed policies are due on July 31, 2020 at 5PM. Please contact the Director of EMS Education, Kristine Cranford, at kmc7@illinois.edu with any questions.

IEMS teaches an EMT-Basic course during the fall and spring academic semesters. Students learn to assess and manage a wide variety of medical emergencies including cardiac, respiratory, diabetic, neurological, and toxicological pathologies, as well as hemorrhage control, shock management, and musculoskeletal injury treatment. UIUC-affiliated individuals are welcome to apply for this course, which includes students, staff, and faculty.
