EMT Basic

Intended Audience

IEMS teaches an EMT-Basic course during the fall and spring academic semesters. The course is open to UIUC students, staff, and faculty who are able to meet the appropriate prerequisites. Students in past classes range from those interested in future health careers in medicine, nursing, pre-hospital care, physical therapy, or physician assistant as well as those in other fields such as engineering, computer science, political science, foreign language, or business. Most EMT students are also students at the University of Illinois.  The majority of our graduates use their license to volunteer with IEMS to provide EMS coverage for campus events; additionally, some choose to seek employment through local ambulance companies or Emergency Departments.

EMTs are on the front line of emergency pre-hospital care and make life and death decisions on a daily basis. The major objective of the course is to prepare students for the work in the various occupational settings relating to emergency health services and the emergency medical service system. IEMS has developed an academically and physically challenging EMT course that stresses academic and clinical abilities, interpersonal skills, critical thinking processes, decision-making abilities, and the capacity for quick and appropriate judgment. Graduates of the program are prepared to interact effectively with other EMS personnel, manage an emergency medical response from start to finish, and satisfy certification requirements from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians as well as the State of Illinois Department of Public Health Division of EMS and Highway Safety. IEMS boasts an excellent first-time pass rate for those who go on to take the NREMT exam.

To observe just a few of the skills you will learn and the impact you can make on the lives of others, please watch our video, which is now in the NCEMSF Hall of Fame!

2017 Collegiate EMS Video of the Year

Applications for the Spring 2019 course were due at 12:00pm on 12/14/18. The application is competitive, and applicants are more likely to be selected if they submit strong, thoughtful responses to the free response questions and have previous volunteer experience with us.  Spring 2018 Course Policies can be downloaded from our website (Membership > Documents).
