Illini EMS teaches a variety of classes to students, campus affiliates, and members of the community. Click on the class links below for more information or to register.

COVID-19 CPR Class Update:

Beginning May 18, 2020, IEMS will continue to offer CPR classes with several additional safety precautions in place to limit the spread of COVID-19.

We are currently offering:  (additional details regarding our safety precautions are available on each course page)

- American Heart Association BLS Provider: In-Person (capped at 6 students with COVID-19 safety procedures in place)

- American Heart Association Heartcode BLS: VAM with online lecture and Voice Assisted Manikin for the skills portion (this hybrid version is recomended for those recertifying in BLS; we recomend first time students take the in person verson)

ECSI CPR/AED/First Aid: In-Person (capped at 6 students with COVID-19 safety procedures in place)

Hands-Only CPR with AED (only available to groups and with COVID-19 safety procedures in place)

ECSI CPR/AED/First Aid: In-Person

The ECSI, CPR, AED, and First Aid In-Person class teaches the skills involved in CPR (adult, child, and infant), AED usage, and First Aid topics. Upon successful completion, students will receive an ECSI CPR/AED/First Aid certification valid for 2 years.

AHA HeartCode BLS CPR: Hybrid

The American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider (AHA BLS Provider) HeartCode course is intended for healthcare professionals or students of health professions. This class provides training in adult, child, and infant CPR as well as AED usage. It consists of an online portion (completed before class) and then an instructor-led, in-class portion. Upon successful completion of the in-class part, students will receive an AHA HeartCode BLS CPR certification valid for 2 years. This level of certification is required to work IEMS events.

 

This course is no longer being offered. To recieve a AHA BLS Provider certification, please see our American Heart Association BLS Provider: In-Person Course or our American Heart Association Heartcode BLS: VAM Course (this course is the new hybrid course with 3 hours online and a 30-45 minute individual skills session).

ECSI CPR/AED/First Aid: Hybrid

The ECSI CPR, AED, and First Aid Hybrid class teaches the skills involved in CPR (adult, child, and infant), AED usage, and several First Aid topics. It consists of an online portion (completed before class) and then an instructor-led, in-class portion. Upon successful completion, students will receive an ECSI CPR/AED/First Aid certification valid for 2 years. 

 

Please email illinimedservices@illinois.edu if you are interested in arranging this class for a group of students. Until further notice, all IEMS classes will take place at the Illinois Fire service Institute (11 Gerty Dr. Champaign, IL 61820).

Hands Only CPR with AED

The Hands-Only (HO) CPR with AED course provides training on how to perform compressions-only CPR on an individual in cardiac arrest and teaches how to use an AED. HO CPR can significantly increase a person's chance of survival and is backed by several organizations including Illini EMS and the American Heart Association. This class does not give a certification but provides high-quality training with hands-on practice. This course is only offered to groups.

AHA HeartCode BLS CPR: VAM

The American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider (AHA BLS Provider) HeartCode course is intended for healthcare professionals or students of health professions. This class provides training in adult, child, and infant CPR as well as AED usage. It consists of an online portion (approximately 3 hours) and then a 30-minute hands-on skills session conducted at our office in the Illini Union. Upon successful completion of the hands-on skills session, students will receive an AHA BLS CPR certification valid for 2 years. This level of certification is required to work IEMS events as an EMT and is sufficient to work as an EMS Aide.

This version of the AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) class is only reccomended for those trying to recertify in BLS. If this is your first time taking a CPR/BLS course, it is reccomended that you take the American Heart Association BLS Provider: In-Person.

EMT Basic

Applications for the Spring 2021 semester will be released soon! Please contact the Director of EMS Education, Kristine Cranford, at kmc7@illinois.edu with any questions.

IEMS teaches an EMT-Basic course during the fall and spring academic semesters. Students learn to assess and manage a wide variety of medical emergencies including cardiac, respiratory, diabetic, neurological, and toxicological pathologies, as well as hemorrhage control, shock management, and musculoskeletal injury treatment. UIUC-affiliated individuals are welcome to apply for this course, which includes students, staff, and faculty.

AHA BLS PROVIDER

The American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider (AHA BLS Provider) course is intended for healthcare professionals or students of health professions. This class provides training in adult, child, and infant CPR as well as AED usage. The class takes around 4 hours and students will be assessed with a written exam as well as a skills test at the end of the course. Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive an AHA BLS CPR certification valid for 2 years. This level of certification is required to work at IEMS events and/or be in the EMT Class.
