On July 26, 1981, Rockford Fire Department Deputy Chief Dean Rawson died in the line of duty after the incident on July 25, 1981.
Rawson was on standby duty for the department when he left his home to lock the Fire Department vehicle. A disturbance arose near the vehicle and during the ensuing fight, Rawson was fatally injured.
Rawson had been a member of the department since 1958. He served 11 years on Engine Company No. 1, one year on Ladder Company No. 3, three years on the Snorkel, and three years on the Rescue Squad. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1970 and attained the rank of captain in 1973. On August 14, 1976, he was promoted to rank of deputy chief.
Rawson had been one of the first E.M.T.s in the Rockford Fire Department. He was an active supporter of emergency medical training in the department and led the efforts within the department to provide ambulance and paramedic service in Rockford.
