On November 6, 1988, Firefighter Dana Schoolman of the Ashkum Township Fire Protection District was fatally injured in the line of duty while responding to a call for service. At approximately 8am and in snowy road conditions, Schoolman responded to the call from his home in his personally owned vehicle but lost control en route. Firefighter Schoolman died from injuries sustained in the ensuing accident.
Schoolman had been a volunteer firefighter with the Ashkum Township Fire Protection District for 6 years, served as an emergency medical technician with the Ash-Clif Ambulance Service, and was a certified hunting safety instructor for the Illinois Department of Conservation.
Funeral services for Schoolman were held at the Assumption BVM Catholic Church in Ashkum and he was interred in the Assumption Catholic Cemetery. Schoolman was survived by his widow and two children.
