On January 27, 1908, Chicago Fire Department Truckman James Gallagher of Truck 1 died in the line of duty while fighting a fire in the Mayer Building on West Adams Street. The fire destroyed the Mayer Building and the Hotel Florence, and several other buildings sustained damage.
