On September 25, 1919, Chicago Fire Department Lieutenant Thomas Tuite of Engine 48 died in the line of duty when he was thrown from Engine 48 at the intersection of East 42nd Street and South Calumet Avenue. The fire company was responding to an automobile fire. Tuite was transported to Wesley Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
