On April 18, 2004, District Chief Kevin R. McIntyre of the Rockford Fire Department suffered a fatal heart attack in the line of duty.
McIntyre reported for work at 7AM on April 18, and his nearly twelve hour work day included a training drill and physical exercise. He returned home around 7PM that evening, having reported that he felt ill for most of the day. McIntyre was found dead in his apartment the next afternoon, April 19, but a forensic pathologist reported that McIntyre most likely suffered the fatal heart attack shortly after returning home on April 18.
Funeral services for McIntyre were held at Trinity Lutheran Church on April 23.
