On March 6, 2000, Assistant Chief Donald Wilson of the Herrick Fire Department suffered a fatal heart attack in the line of duty while fighting a residential fire.
Wilson drove Engine 1 to the scene of the fire and, after stretching a hoseline and extinguishing some exterior flames, he climbed to the roof of the attached garage to ventilate the structure. After cutting a hole in the roof with an axe, Wilson collapsed. He was transported to Shelby Memorial Hospital in Shelbyville, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Funeral services for Wilson were held at Herrick Baptist Chuch on March 10, and he was interred at Myers Cemetery.
