On June 27, 2021, Firefighter Mehdi “Matt” Mourad of the Wabash Fire Protection District was fatally injured in the line of duty while responding to a call for service. Mourad was responding to a multiple vehicle accident in his personally owned vehicle but lost control en route and rear-ended a vehicle that was stopped on the side of Interstate 57 due to severe weather in the area. Firefighter Mourad was taken to Carle Hospital in Urbana, but died from injuries sustained in the accident.
Mourad had been a volunteer firefighter with the Wabash Fire Protection District for 5 days. Originally from Morocco, Mourad was attending Lake Land College in Mattoon, studying automotive technology on a student visa and worked at KC Summers, also in Mattoon.
Funeral services for Mourad were held at the New Hope Church in Effingham and he was interred in the Neoga Cemetery. Mourad was survived by his parents, grandparents, and siblings.
