On December 4, 2015, Firefighter Mark Zielinski of the Matteson Fire Department died in the line of duty while on an emergency medical call.
Firefighter Zielinski responded to a reported heart attack in the Matteson Wal-Mart store. While administering CPR to the patient, Zielinski suffered a medical emergency and was transported to Franciscan St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields where he died from a heart attack. The patient Zielinski was working with was also transported to a hospital.
Funeral services for Zielinski, a member of the Matteson Fire Department for 13 years, were held on December 11 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Harvey.
