On May 4, 1971, Chicago Fire Department Firefighter Louis Coda of Engine 93, 17th Battalion, died in the line of duty. Coda suffered a heart attack and collapsed while dragging a hose line during a fire on S. Michigan Avenue. Coda was taken to Roseland Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
