On July 3, 1923, Chicago Fire Department Lieutenant John Sandberg of Engine 32 was fatally injured in the line of duty. A twelve-year veteran of the department, Sandberg was trying to jump onto Engine 32 as it was moving, but he slipped and fell under one of the apparatus wheels. Sandberg died the following day at Burnside Hospital.
